Geology Tutor

Loch Ranza Field Studies Centre on the Isle of Arran has a vacancy for a geology/environmental science graduate to join this close-knit, fun team from January 2009.

As a Geology Tutor/Field Studies Instructor, you will open up our young guests' eyes to new concepts of learning and experience, using the outside world as your classroom.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to gain experience for a future career in teaching.

Loch Ranza offers residential Field Studies courses to primary, secondary and A Level groups. Using your knowledge from your environmental science, geology, geography or other relevant degree, you will work with a group of up to 12 children or teenagers, taking sole responsibility for their field studies sessions.

If you don't possess a degree, but have similar experience of teaching field studies, we'd still like to hear from you. No formal teaching qualifications are required as we provide all the training you'll need to deliver our sessions. This position is the perfect step if you're looking to gain practical experience towards a career in teaching.

With the centre and surrounding areas of scientific interest, as their classroom, your group will have the chance to search for freshwater invertebrates, dress up as historical characters or discover fossils that have not seen the light of day since they sunk into the Jurassic mud over 160 million years ago!

You'll need basic IT skills, a high level of initiative and commitment, boundless enthusiasm and a true desire to work with children of all ages. We will provide all of the necessary teaching skills and local knowledge. No previous experience of teaching is required.

You'll also join in with other aspects of our guests' stay, including evening entertainment, to ensure they have a memorable experience.

Loch Ranza Field Studies Centre is located to the north of the breath-taking Isle of Arran. With a maximum capacity of 120 guests and 10 staff, there's a tight, friendly staff team. The location offers a fantastic opportunity for anyone also interested in outdoor activities, with plenty of mountain bike routes, climbing, walking and kayaking in the area. Loch Ranza itself is a sea loch, with opportunities for kayaking and windsurfing.

In addition to a competitive wage, this position includes a residential option, with meals included. Staff accommodation is in single rooms, within a staff block, with a shared bathroom.

This position is available from January 2009 until mid-November, with the option to return the following year, or to work for several months within this period.
